About the film:
The power of film can compel us to laughter, a dream-like haze and even to fall in love. And thanks to Charlie’s film for Austrian electronic artists Klangkarussell, we can now break into a cold sweat while hunched over our laptop at home: the video features Mustang Wanted, a Ukrainian urban free climber whose fearless exploits take him up some of the highest buildings on earth, without ropes. Or permission.
Though they intended to shoot in the Ukraine itself, military action in the Crimea led to Kiev being declared unsafe for foreign music video crews, and production moved to Belgrade: “I wanted the video to be a compelling and terrifying look at what Mustang does and why he does it.” says Charlie. “He doesn’t speak a word of English so verbal communication was very slow – but his total lack of fear is beyond speech anyway.”
As terrifying as watching the video is, shooting it was worse. “There were some incredibly hair-raising moments during the shoot,” explains Charlie. “I had to look at the monitor and pretend I was watching a Youtube clip just to get through it. A sudden gust of wind and it could have all gone terribly wrong!”
While the director’s now off shooting an underwater music video in French Polynesia, you may well wonder where the star of the Klangkarussell video is. He’s found a new way to live on the edge: fighting Russian intrusion into eastern Ukraine.
